    - Elie Semoun : Le climat est anxiogène, les attentats, l’antisémitisme… Ma pire angoisse, c’est ce que je reçois sur mon Twitter ou mon Facebook, des insultes comme « youpin » , « sale juif » , et j’en passe… Ma pire angoisse, c’est cette violence gratuite qui peut tomber sur moi, sur d’autres. Pour la première fois, quand je me balade dans la rue, dans des endroits un peu chauds, on me fait des doigts d’honneur ou on m’insulte… Je n’avais jamais connu ça. D’habitude, enfin je l’espère, les gens m’aiment bien. Là, je sens une forme de haine, d’agressivité que je n’avais jamais ressentie. Vous me demandez ma pire angoisse… je suis sincère.
    - Depuis quand ?
    - Depuis les attentats et depuis que je dis certaines choses sur Dieudonné. Son public peut être très violent.
    - C’est difficile à vivre ?
    - Le racisme est partout. C’est difficile d’être arabe, musulman, noir, comme ce n’est pas évident d’être juif non plus en ce moment. Cela ne m’empêche pas de dormir, mais ça m’interroge. Pour la première fois. Avant je faisais mon métier avec une certaine insouciance, avec un peu de profondeur aussi… Là, ça devient vraiment bizarre.
    - Cela peut vous retenir dans l’écriture de vos sketchs ?
    - Dans mon prochain spectacle, il y a un sketch sur un jihadiste débutant qui s’inscrit sur Internet. Je vais le faire, bien sûr. Mais je ne sais pas ce que ça peut avoir comme conséquence. C’est vraiment la première fois de ma vie que je me pose ces questions. Pourtant, ce que j’écris d’habitude n’est jamais léger ni gratuit. Je parle toujours un peu de la société, des losers, des racistes… J’ai aussi un sketch sur le FN qui s’installe dans une mairie. [...]
    - Vous avez encore des contacts avec Dieudonné ?
    - Ça m’arrive, oui. Evidemment, je ne cautionne pas ses propos. Mais on a vécu très longtemps ensemble, on a débuté notre carrière à deux… Quand je visionne nos sketchs en duo, ça me fait rire, je trouve ça encore très moderne.
    - Vous fait- il encore rire ?
    - C’est compliqué… (Il soupire.) Oui, il est encore drôle. Mais pas toujours… Ce qui est terrible en fait, c’est qu’il est drôle. C’est le problème. S’il n’était pas drôle, ça n’aurait pas d’impact, c’est ce qui est vicieux."

   "By definitively re-electing Benjamin Netanyahu, Israelis refused to go left and refused to go right. This was what Netanyahu expected when he called for early elections -- and having just won his fourth, he certainly counts as the expert. The important question now is why Israelis are sticking with the status quo when external critics from the left and internal critics from the right were hoping for a meaningful course correction.
    Start with the biggest headline, namely the failure of the center-left coalition led by Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni to eclipse support for Netanyahu’s center-right party and its far-right partners. To critics abroad, from U.S. Democrats who share President Barack Obama’s evident dislike for Netanyahu to Europeans of all political stripes who consider Netanyahu closed to peace, it was exciting to think that the center-left might stage a historic recovery and bring us back to the days of Ehud Barak or even Yitzhak Rabin.
    But there are at least two major reasons the center-left failed to re-emerge. The most important is that Israeli-Palestinian relations, the only area in which the Herzog-Livni coalition would’ve differed meaningfully from Netanyahu, don’t depend only on Israel. They depend on the Palestinians, too.

   "Those around the world who are upset with Prime Minister's Benjamin Netanyahu electoral victory over the Zionist Camp party should put much of the responsibility for Israel's rightward turn squarely where it belongs: on the Palestinian Authority (PA).
    At least twice over the last 15 years, Israel has offered the Palestinians extraordinarily generous two-state solutions. The first time was in 2000-2001 when Ehud Barak and Bill Clinton offered the Palestinians more than 90% of the West Bank and all of the Gaza Strip, with a capital in Jerusalem. Yassir Arafat turned down the offer and started an intifada, in which 4000 people were killed. This self-inflicted wound by the leader of the PA contributed greatly to the weakening of Israel's peace camp, most particularly of Ehud Barak's Labor party. The current Zionist Camp party, which is an offshoot of Labor, has continued to suffer from that weakening.
    Then again, in 2007, Ehud Olmert offered the Palestinians an even more generous resolution, to which Mahmoud Abbas failed to respond positively. This failure also contributed to the weakening of the Israeli center-left and the strengthening of the right.
    Israel is a vibrant democracy, in which people vote their experience, their fear and their hope. In 2000-2001 and 2007, most Israelis had high hopes for a peaceful resolution of the Palestinian conflict. These hopes were dashed by Arafat's rejection and Abbas' refusal to accept generous peace offers. It is not surprising therefore, that so many Israelis now vote their fear instead of their hope.
    The Obama administration also contributed to the election results in Israel by refusing to listen to Israeli concerns -- concerns shared by Israelis of every political stripe -- about the impending deal with Iran. Many Israelis have given up any hope of influencing the Obama administration to demand more from the Iranians. The current deal contains a sunset provision which all but guarantees that Iran will have nuclear weapons within a decade. Zionist Camp leader Isaac Herzog made a serious mistake when he said he trusted President Obama to make a good deal with the Iranians. Few Israelis share that trust, as do few members of Congress, and few Sunni Arab governments. That lack of trust was reflected in voting for a Prime Minister who has been more confrontational and less trusting.
    If Israelis voted their fears, these were not entirely irrational fears; they were based on the history of the region. The international community, academics and the media tend to have short memories. They will blame Netanyahu, and especially his campaign rhetoric, for a result of which they disapprove. But Netanyahu's rhetoric found a receptive audience because many Israeli voters have long memories. They remember what the leaders of the Palestinian Authority, the Obama administration, the Iranian mullahs and the United Nations have done and said with regard to Israel. They remember the lethal responses to earlier peace offers. [...]"

   "The premises of your questions are wrong. I haven’t changed my policy. I never retracted my speech in Bar Illan University 6 years ago calling for a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish state. What has changed is the reality. Abu Mazen the Palestinian leader refuses to recognize the Jewish state, has made a pact with Hamas, that calls for the destruction of the Jewish state, and every territory that is vacated today in the Middle East is taken up by Islamist forces. We want that to change so can realize a vision of real sustained peace. I don’t want a one state solution. I want a sustainable, peaceful, two state solution but for that circumstances have to change.
    First of all that state would become a terror state. Iran has said that it would the arm the West Bank the way it armed Gaza. We withdrew from Gaza. We got, just a few months ago – not ancient history but a few months ago – thousands of rockets, Andrea, on our heads … we don’t want it to happen again.
    And I think that the administration has said time and time again that the only way to achieve peace is a negotiated solution. You can’t impose peace. And in any case, if you want to get peace, you’ve got to get the Palestinian leadership to abandon their pact with Hamas and engage in genuine negotiations with Israel for an achievable peace."
    When Mitchell asked if Netanyahu was being racially divisive, Netanyahu answered that he was proud to be prime minister of all Israelis. "I am very proud to be the prime minister of all Israeli citizens — Arab and Jews alike. I am proud that Israel is the one country in a very broad radius in which Arabs have free and fair elections. That’s sacrosanct. That will never change."
    Netanyahu was also asked about his approach to the Iranian nuclear threat. "By coming to the U.S. I didn’t mean any disrespect or any attempt at partisanship. I was merely speaking . . . of something that I viewed would endanger the survival of Israel. I felt my obligation to speak up there. But there are so many areas … where we must work together with the United States and with the president. We have no other alternative. We are allies.     La question qui intéresse tout le monde est aussi quel est exactement le Netanyahu que rencontreront les Palestiniens dans les prochains mois. Est-ce le Bibi des derniers jours de la campagne, qui cherche la confrontation ou bien celui qui a mené des négociations secrètes par l’intermédiaire de son émissaire Yitzhak Molcho, qui ont abouti même à des points d’entente de grande envergure ?    "Almost since its inception, UNRWA, the international institution charged with aiding the refugees, has worked against their resettlement in Arab countries where Palestinians are located. One way UNRWA has done this has been by shifting its mission from refugee relief to education, devising its own expanded definitions of who is a refugee, and expanding its legal mandates to "protect" and represent refugees. As a result, the Palestinian clients of UNRWA have gradually taken over the organization and have undermined an international relief effort, created in naïve good faith, but with the complicity of the UN General Assembly.
    Over the years, UNRWA, by its own admission, has proudly evolved from a temporary relief and works program into a broad social welfare organization for Palestinian society. It has also succeeded to such an extent that "there is little or no significant difference between the standard of living of refugees and non-refugees in the WBGS [West Bank and Gaza Strip], Jordan, or Syria."[1] Maintaining those standards of living in dynamic economic conditions, much in the manner of a government, is a primary concern of the organization.[2] Conversely, the international community, led by the United States and now, the European Union, has adopted a strategy of increasing support for UNRWA and other Palestinian institutions, such as the Palestinian Authority, in the traditional effort to avoid instability and, since the 1990s, in the attempt to shape Palestinian state-building.[3] Another irony, however, is that UNRWA competes directly with the Palestinian Authority for international support.[4]"

    At least that is the view of the UN’s top women’s rights body, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). CSW ends its annual meeting on Friday, March 20 by condemning only one of the 193 UN member states for violating women’s rights – Israel.
    Not Syria. Where government forces routinely employ rape and other sexual violence and torture against women as a tactic of war. Where in 2014 the Assad regime starved, tortured and killed at least 24,000 civilians, and three million people – mostly women and children – are refugees.
    Not Saudi Arabia. Where women are physically punished if not wearing compulsory clothing, are almost entirely excluded from political life, cannot drive, cannot travel without a male relative, receive half the inheritance of their brothers, and where their testimony counts for half that of a man’s.
    Not Sudan. Where domestic violence is not prohibited. There is no minimum age for “consensual” sex. The legal age of marriage for girls is ten. 88% of women under 50 have undergone female genital mutilation. And women are denied equal rights in marriage, inheritance and divorce.
    Not Iran. Where every woman who registered as a presidential candidate in the last election was disqualified. “Adultery” is punishable by death by stoning. Women who fight back against rapists and kill their attackers are executed. The constitution bars female judges. And women must obtain the consent of their husbands to work outside the home.
    In fact, not only is there no possibility that the UN Commission on the Status of Women will criticize Iran, Iran is an elected member of CSW. Sudan – whose president has been indicted for genocide and crimes against humanity – is currently a CSW Vice-Chair.
    The 2015 CSW resolution on Israel will repeat, as it does every year, that “the Israeli occupation remains the major obstacle for Palestinian women with regard to their advancement, self-reliance and integration in the development of their society…” Not Palestinian men. Not religious edicts and traditions. Not a culture of violence. Not an educational system steeped in rejection of peaceful coexistence and of tolerance. Instead, the fault for a UN statistic like this one – an average of 17% of Palestinian women are in the labor force as compared to 70% of Palestinian men – lies with the Jewish scapegoat.
    That fact comes from one of only nine official documents produced by the UN for the 2015 annual CSW meeting. Eight were procedural or general in nature, and one was entitled: “Situation of and assistance to Palestinian women.”
    By comparison, there was no report on Chinese women and girls, half a billion people without elementary civil and political rights, who still face the prospect of forced abortion and sterilization. There was no report on women in Somalia, where female genital mutilation is ubiquitous, sexual violence is rampant, and women are systematically subordinate to men. There was no report on women in Yemen, where the penal code goes easy on the killers of women for “immodest” or “defiant” behavior, there is no minimum age for “marriage,” and women have no equal rights to property, employment, credit, pay, education, or housing.
    And the women’s rights scene is not the only liberal sham at the UN. The UN’s top human rights body, the Human Rights Council (HRC), will wrap up a major session next week by adopting a minimum of four times as many resolutions slamming Israel than any other country on earth.
    Condemnations of Israel will include a resolution demanding Israel immediately give back the Golan Heights to Syria – the place where Syrians run from their own government for life-saving Israeli medical care. Tallying all the resolutions and decisions condemning a specific state over the history of the Human Rights Council, one-third has been directed at Israel alone.
    Remember Ukraine? In the past year, there have been at least 5,500 confirmed killed – with recent reports from Germany suggesting the total may be as high as 50,000 dead – in addition to a million people displaced. But the score is 67 Council resolutions and decisions attacking Israel and zero on Russia.
    So who is calling the shots at the Council? A closer look at its members reveals human rights luminaries like Qatar – that bankrolls the terrorist organization Hamas – along with China, Pakistan, Russia and Saudi Arabia. It is impossible to add this all up and conclude that the UN’s treatment of Israel is anything but wildly discriminatory. In the twisted language of UN rights, the means is the verbiage of equality, while the end game is prejudice. [...]"
